KOCHI: State Planning Board Vice-Chairman K M Chandrasekhar has said that the Planning Commission, which had aimed at economic stability of the country earlier, is now focusing more on social equality. After Independence, the Planning Commission had focused on economic stability. With an increase in the growth rate after 1991, the Plan panel changed its vision, he said during a lecture at the Rajagiri Vidya Peetam here on Friday. It is only because of economic development that the world is now looking at India. He said that programmes such as PMGSYU and NREGA were conceived by the Centre, mainly aimed at social equality. Chandrasekhar noted that the progress of a nation could be achieved through the development of its villages.
