KOCHI: The city police have decided to intensify the drive against drunk driving. As part of the move, they have decided to procure over 40 advanced digital breath analysers. According to K Padmakumar, IG Ernakulam Range, the number of drunk driving cases has come down within the city limits. “As part of our drive, we will use 40 advanced technology-supported digital breath analysers to intensify checking. Mishaps during night have decreased. Checking will be intensified so as to monitor daytime accidents. The infrastructure in the city also has to be blamed for road accidents,” Padmakumar said.The new breath analysers are German-made and give accurate reading. “There have been complaints regarding the readings given by outdated breath analysers. The new one takes reading while the driver speaks to the cops. It is very accurate and has been recommended by the Motor Vehicles Department. Each police station will be provided with two analysers. The policemen will be trained to handle the machines,” a police official said. The police have intensified checking during daytime. “We have spotted certain locations where the chances for drunk-driving mishaps are high. The move is to reduce the number of drunk driving cases in the city.
