PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University vice-chancellor J A K Tareen, on Tuesday, visited the students’ general mess and sampled the food served there. The VC had promised the students that he would visit the mess periodically after they protested the bad quality food being served there on Feb 12.After inspecting the facilities, the VC felt that the mess was overcrowded and students had to wait for a long time to get their food.Tareen instructed the caterer to increase the number of counters to serve more students and also asked them to improve the quality of food. According to a release, the strength of students in the hostel had swelled from about 900 to 3500 in less than four years. The university, in less than four years, added 10 hostels (total 19), four cafeterias and also fast food centres to meet the requirement of students. The food is essentially served in common mess through a caterer. The university is constantly monitoring the quality and hygiene and wherever any deficiency is found, suitable remedial measures were being taken.
