HYDERABAD: A two-wheeler drive from Erragadda to MJ market in Patny and Nampally to Mehdipatnam is becoming back-breaking for motorists. With most major arterial roads in the twin cities battered by heavy rains, huge potholes have appeared on most stretches. This correspondent, while travelling from Erragadda to MJ market found hundreds of potholes on the stretch of varying sizes and shapes. It is the same story on other roads. At Somajiguda and Lakdi-ka-pul minor scuffles broke out between motorists. A motorist had to suddenly slow down his vehicle at Lakdi-ka-pul to avoid big potholes, which resulted in another motorist coming from behind accidentally hitting him and causing a heated exchange between the two.The main road at Erramanzil near the Civil Supplies Department and near Model House in Punjagutta have their bitumen getting peeled off and sand particles scattering on the road, resulting in skidding of vehicles. The stretch has become a nightmare for vehicle drivers, with dust particles flying into their eyes and causing irritation. In front of the police control room near Public Gardens, the condition is no better as large number of potholes have sprung up. Traffic cops manning the signal said their higher-ups had requested the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to fill up potholes but so far no action has been taken. The Ameerpet stretch particularly at Sarathi Studios, Maithrivanam, near Big Bazar and Punjajutta crossroads need immediate re-carpeting as do the Paradise, Mettuguda and Tarnaka stretch.Tardy pothole filling: Filling up potholes by the GHMC is not going on expected lines. Despite the dry weather since the last three days, filling work has been tardy. Last week, mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu had announced around 3,879 potholes would be filled up in a week but the ground reality is different. TDP corporator and floor leader in GHMC, Singireddy Srinivas Reddy said as more than 30,000 Ganesh idols are going to immersed in the next week, there is an urgent need to fill up potholes on war-footing.
