CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress on Monday observed the 20th anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by paying respect to the deceased leader and taking an anti-terrorist pledge. The observance began at the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee headquarters at Sathyamurthy Bhavan in the morning. Congress leaders paid floral tribute to Rajiv Gandhi at the office and garlanded his statue at Saidapet. They then proceeded to the Rajiv Gandhi memorial at Sriperumbudur to pay tribute.TNCC president B S Gnanadesikan instructed his party men to set up pandals in every area in memory of the deceased leader and distribute buttermilk through the day.Gnanadesikan, former TNCC presidents K V Thangkabalu, S Kumarianandnan, former Union minister S Thirunavukkarasar and Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa were among the leaders who took part in the observance. They and Sukma District Collector Alex Paul Menon together took an anti-terrorism pledge.“Rajiv Gandhi had a vision for India. He is the only leader who seriously tried to find a solution to the Sri Lankan Tamil problem. If the Indo-Sri Lanka accord that he signed had been implemented the Tamils in Sri Lanka would not have had to go through suffering,” said Gnanadesikan.Other Congress party workers held programmes across the city to mark the assassination anniversary, which is observed across India as Anti-Terrorism Day. Some held blood donation camps and distributed food while others held small prayer meetings.
