New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday allayed minority communities’ fears of targeted attacks ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year.
"I will make sure that there are no attacks on minorities," Singh here said at an event organised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), to pay tribute to Mother Teresa, who was canonised recently.
“There were attacks on minorities during Delhi elections. We met the delegates and corrections were made. Interestingly, once the elections got over such incidents also stopped. So now I will make sure that there is no such situation created before or after polls,” he said, referring to a spate of attacks on churches in Delhi before assembly elections.
The statement comes at the time when the National Commission for Minorities member incharge for UP, Farida Khan, expressed fear of communalism and polarization ahead of elections.
Tensions have been simmering in UP for some time since the mob lynching of a Muslim man on suspicious of beef consumption in Dadri village and claims of a “Hindu exodus” from Kairana town.
"India is a university of tolerance. Our tolerance is unique," Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday. “In India, there is no space for discrimination.”
"I am a Hindu and I believe in Hindutva, which stands for vasudayan kutumbakam, which means the world is one family,” he said.
