New Delhi: Shammi Kapoor - Bolywood's original king of romance passed away on Sunday. The brilliant entertainer with infectious energy and the famous hand jive will live in the memories of his fans forever.
The man was a lot more than just being an onscreen charmer. When the all important three words' World Wide Web' were alien to most of us, he was browsing through the Internet. Shammi Kapoor popularised the Internet hugely, he was the amongst the first Indians to have a website of his own.
His website http://junglee.org.in/ was an informative and exclusive database of the famous and elaborate Kapoor Khandaan, the first family of Bollywood.
Shammi Kapoor epitomised the word 'Yahoo' after his hit song from the film 'Junglee'. And several years ago when 'Yahoo' opened one of its branches in Mumbai he was invited by Jerry Yang. In a media interaction Shammi Kapoor admitted that he was pleasantly surprised that his 'Yahoo' song was played in the festivities of the launch. And ironically, for the longest time many Indians were under the impression that Kapoor owned the internet giant.
Being a computer buff (in his own words) he was one of the most interactive celebrities on both Facebook and Twitter.
His famous tweet inviting Deepika Padukone for coffee after she broke up with his grandson Ranbir Kapoor caught a lot of media attention. The man interacted with fans and friends alike, from Abhishek Bachchan, Priety Zinta, Priyanka Chopra to Javed Akhtar. He would animatedly chat with everybody and anybody.
The tech-savvy Kapoor will undoubtedly be remembered for not only being the spontaneous and charming actor he was, but also the man who helped the net carve a niche in the country.
Ailing Kapoor posted his last tweet on November 28, 2010 to Priyanka Chopra. He tweeted, "@priyankachopra look for a joint called RESSEE. Super dance of the fountains. 1961. Love"
