KOCHI: Noted Bengali writer and Jnanpith award winner Mahasweta Devi has exhorted the students and writers to come together to resist injustice against the common man by governments. She was addressing a meeting organised to express solidarity with the people evicted for the Vallarpadom International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at St Augustine Church parish hall at Moolampilly on Friday."We should not allow such things to happen anywhere in the country. A unified and peaceful campaign by the public has forced the Chattisgarh Government and the Centre to release human rights activist Binayak Sen.Incidents like Moolampilly will darken the image of the state, said Mahasweta Devi. She referred to a recent observation that Moolampilly was Kerala's Singur. Mahasweta Devi was on a visit to the evicted families at Moolampilly after three years. When she first came in 2008 she had interacted with the families here. Mahasweta Devi had also written to the then Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan demanding rehabilitation of the evicted families.Mahasweta Devi had then condemned the reluctance on the part of the writers in Kerala to react to the developments in Moolampilly. On the occasion, writer Anand said that writers should not detach themselves from the contemporary realities. They should react to contemporary issues, he said.Activists Civic Chandran, Laha Gopalan, Vilayodi Venugopalan, writers K R Meera, M N Ravunni and coordination committee convener Francis Kalathunkal also spoke. P J Selestin of Moolampilly presided over the function.
