CHENNAI: The reverse flow of sewage into households from underground drainage network during the rainy season is one immediate problem residents of Nilamangai Nagar in Adambakkam hope the Corporation will solve.“Despite repeated appeals to Alandur Municipality, the problem continues to haunt us. During heavy rains, the sewage water enters households. It is a nightmarish experience. The ineffective pump house in the neighbourhood is an important aspect of the problem,” said NV Sampath, a resident.Other residents, V Murali and S Manga, said choking of storm water drains aggravated the problem. “The sewage and flood water mixes up. The entire neighbourhood literally floats.”Raising a similar issue, president of Civil Aviation Colony Welfare Association in Nanganallur R Gururajan said the choked storm water drains was a key issue. “In Nanganallur, we have been asking the authorities to desilt the drains periodically besides properly covering them by fixing concrete slabs.” V Rama Rao, secretary of Lakshmi Nagar Civic Welfare Association in Nanganallur, wonders about the fate of the much-talked about Integrated Compost Yard project at Venkatamangalam near Vandalur. “Anyway, we hope that the Corporation authorities will implement Solid Waste Management Act in letter and spirit to ensure a clean neighbourhood.” The water table of Nanganallur has gone down badly. This is an important issue the authorities should look into. The existing municipality hospital should be upgraded.“The middle class people are compelled to take treatment in private hospitals since government hospitals are far away. On a priority basis, the hospital should be improved,” he said. Another issue pending for a long time is linking the Pazhavanthangal subway with 5th Main Road, Nanganallur.
