New Delhi: The news of Telugu actor Uday Kiran committing suicide in his flat on Sunday night has left many shocked. For those who came in late, the 33-year-old actor hanged himself from the ceiling in his flat in Srinagar Colony, Punjagutta. Kiran's parents and his wife found his body hanging from the ceiling at his flat in Sri Nagar colony here last night, police said today. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

One of the youngest winners of the Filmfare best actor award after Kamal Haasan (for Telugu film 'Nuvvu Nenu'), Uday spent close to 13 years in South cinema. And in over a decade-long career, Uday, who had largely worked in Telugu films, was also seen in a few Tamil projects.

Kiran made his Tollywood debut in 2000 under Teja, whom he regarded as his mentor. Kiran featured in Teja's film 'Chitram'. The film, featuring Kiran as a 17-year-old boy, went on to be a super hit. Such was the impact that the film succeeded in setting several trends. The next two films Nuvvu Nenu and Manasantha Nuvve that followed, helped Uday carve a niche for himself in Telugu cinema. The success of his first three films, 'Chitram', 'Nuvvu Nenu' and 'Manasantha Nuvve', were Box Office hits and helped him earn the title 'Hat-trick Hero'.

Interestingly, with his fourth film Kalusukovalani, the actor impressed many with his outstanding dancing skills. He was appreciated for his efforts in songs 'Udayinchina' and 'Cheliya Cheliya'. And with the popular film 'Sreeram', he took up what he hadn't so far - action sequences. The actor also won plaudits for his role of a police officer in the film.

With K Balachander's film 'Poi', Kiran ventured into Tamil in 2000. But his subsequent projects Vambu Sandai and Pen Singam in Tamil didn't earn huge success, they did moderately well at BO.

His other performances have been in the films 'Neeku Nenu Naaku Nuvvu', 'Viyyalavari Kayyalu', 'Gunde Jhallumandi' and 'Nuvvekaddunte Nenakkadunta'.

In 2003, Uday was engaged to Chiranjeevi's daughter Sushmita. However, the engagement had to be called off. As reports suggest, Uday was not accepted a few members of Chiranjeevi's family. Post the incident, the actor's downfall began.

A police officer too quoted Uday's wife and other family members as saying that he was in deep depression for the last few days.

According to reports, when the actor killed himself, his wife was not at home. He had also refused to attend the birthday party of a relative in the city on Sunday night and sent his wife for the same. Vishita grew suspicious when he did not respond to her phone calls after sending her an SMS reportedly expressing his love. She rushed to the flat where she found him hanging from the ceiling in the gym. With the help of neighbours, she shifted him to hospital.

Kiran was depressed over not getting any new film since February last year. Family members told police that he was in touch with a Tamil filmmaker and was waiting for his phone call Sunday. He became depressed when he did not get the call.
