HYDERABAD: A sum of about Rs 50 crore, the unaccounted money seized while being carried between the last general election in 2009 and the latest byelections in March this year, is still in the custody of the income tax department which is yet to receive details of each case.“We send case-by-case details to the IT department. The delay is due to lack of staff available with the staff assigned with the duties of the Election Commission of India (ECI). It will be better if the ECI empowers respective state CEOs to deal with such cases for speedy disposal. The EC will adopt a mechanism to deal with all the cases," chief electoral officer Bhanwarlal said here on Monday. He said that since the schedule for the bypolls for 18 Assembly and one parliamentary seat was announced, an amount of Rs 7,24,11,403 had been seized. BAN ON SAKSHI ADs: On the representation made by the AP Union of Working Journalists and others on the controversial GO issued by the state government last week banning government advertisements to Sakshi newspaper and TV channel, Bhanwarlal said the Election Commission did not find any violation of the model code of conduct and there was no need for ECI's intervention in the absence of any material. The CEO on Monday received a complaint from APCC spokesman B. Kamalakara Rao that in the Ongole Assembly Constituency the names of about 38,000 voters were deleted as bogus, dead and ineligible, while the Election Commission is receiving fresh applications for enrolment in bulk instead of individually. A YSR Congress delegation led by PR Kiran Kumar Reddy alleged that police were illegally detaining leaders and supporters of the party and threatening the voters that if they voted for YSRCP, they would face dire consequences. They also complained that ruling party MLC Chengalarayulu was influencing the voters of Obulavaripally mandal in Kadapa district and chief minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy was wooing the party cadres with posts and positions in government bodies.
