THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eminent poet and activist Sugathakumari said here on Wednesday that it was high time the Neyyar was preserved. She was inaugurating a one-day hunger strike jointly organised by the River Protection Committee and other social activist committees demanding revenue-police intervention to prevent illegal sand mining in the Neyyar. Sugathakumari also said that the activities of the sand mafia have to be checked. If the mafia can kill a person within no time, it could destroy the beauty of Neyyar with equal ease, she said. River Protection Committee state president J M Rahim and vice-president R Narayanan Thambi were among those who spoke on the occasion. The Committee office-bearers alleged that the Government was keeping mum on the sand mining issue fearing that it would affect the UDF’s chances in the upcoming Neyyattinkara bypoll. The hunger strike concluded with a talk by All-India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi chairman P Gopinathan Nair.
