New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will protect the parents of a young man who was shot dead by the son of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh in 2011.
The CM's son was held guilty under the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and was sentenced to five years in jail which is to complete soon. CBI has chosen not to file an appeal. The parents had to move the top court, contending they were being threatened over filing the appeal to get the punishment enhanced for the CM's son.
On Tuesday, a bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi said: "We will protect the parents...we will take over the responsibility for their safety."
It told the Advocate General for Manipur government that the state no longer had to bother about the security of the parents since the apex court would now take care of it.
"We will give them protection over and above what you gave...we will ask CRPF and CISF to provide them security and the top officers will be made responsible for ensuring it," said the bench.
It further stated that the case will now be shifted out of Manipur, "keeping in view the peculiar circumstances and sensitivity".
Justice Gogoi said the case will be transferred to the Guwahati High Court for adjudicating the appeal to be filed by the parents.
The Advocate General responded that the state government was already providing security to the parents as well as the lawyer and the social activist, who was helping them in filing the appeal. He added that the state had no objection if the apex court still wanted to pass further orders.
The bench will deliver its order in the afternoon when it is apprised of the designation of the officers of the CRPF and the CISF, who are to be made accountable for ensuring the parents' safety.
