The recently concluded elections of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) left Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal being elected as the president of the body after almost 22 years.
Sibal, who recently completed his Golden Jubliee at the bar, defeated incumbent vice-president of the SCBA Pradeep Rai and the current president Dr Adish Aggarwala.
On the said occasion, outgoing president Dr Aggarwala wrote a letter to Sibal and congratulated him over his victory. “I congratulate you on your landslide victory in the Presidential elections of SCBA – 2024. Being a commoners’ lawyer, I visited your residence and greeted you immediately after you were declared elected,” the letter read.
Dr Aggarwala in his letter also pointed out that the Bar Association Elections shall be free from political interference else it would not be able to protect the interests of the Bar.
“Once political parties become involved at the level of the Supreme Court Bar Association, they will eventually get involved with all Bar Associations in India. Once there is division of lawyers on political lines in our Bar Associations, we will no longer be able to protect the interests of the members of the Bar,” Dr Aggarwala told Mr Sibal in his letter.
Congratulating the former Union Law Minister on his landslide victory, Dr Aggarwala pointed out that while the Congress and its allies “openly decided to support” him, the BJP supported another candidate Pradeep Kumar Rai.
“As a matter of fact, some BJP and RSS Members declined to accept the decision of their leadership to support Pradeep Kumar Rai. And ultimately, these defiant members of BJP voted for you. Even though I have been politically neutral, I am happy that all the right-thinking members, cutting across the political divide, have supported me in these elections,” Dr Aggarwala said.
He also urged Sibal to come good on his plans to get the big corporates to assist young and needy lawyers through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday congratulated senior advocate Kapil Sibal on being elected as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
“Mr Sibal, heartiest congratulations on our behalf for being elected as the president of the SCBA. We look forward towards your cooperation and (that of) the members of the executive committee,” the CJI said while holding a ceremonial bench.
Thanking the CJI, Sibal said, “It is my honour that after 22 years, I have been given this opportunity to serve the bar. From our side, you will have complete cooperation and that’s our commitment to the bench. It is through this cooperation that we can take the agenda forward.”
