Shillong: The Meghalaya Right to Information Movement (MRTIM) kicked off its protest rally on Tuesday against the UPA Government's decision to amend the Right to Information Act, 2005.
At least seven NGOs under the umbrella of the MRTIM held a protest rally at Motphran, where various speakers informed people about the Congress-led UPA Government's decision to amend the Act to exclude file notings from the purview of RTI Act, 2005.
Similar protest rallies have been scheduled on August 3 at Khyndai Lad and at Laban Iew Dak on August 4.
The protest rallies were part of similar movement, being carried out throughout the country against the Centre's decision. Such protest rallies would also be held in other parts of the state.
The leaders of the movement would take part in a weeklong dharna from August six at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, along with other organisations from the rest of the nation.
Earlier, State Information Commissioner D P Wahlang had pointed out that the Centre's decision to exclude file notings from the purview of RTI Act would weaken the Act itself.
