TIRUCHY: Customs officials arrested three passengers bound for Kuala Lumpur after they tried to smuggle 13.46 kg ephedrine worth Rs 13.46 lakh at the airport here on Friday. According to sources, when the officials were screening the baggage of passengers of Air Asia flight bound for Malaysia, they grew suspicious over the luggage of two women Malarvizhi (38) and Lakshmi (43), both from Chennai, and a man Mohammed Kuviyan (37) of Meemisal in Pudukkottai.After a thorough check they found ephedrine, a narcotic substance, concealed in their bags. Subsequently, they seized the narcotic substance and all the three were arrested under the Prevention of Narcotics Trafficking Act.Additional Commissioner of Customs G P Sonthalia told media that the accused had confessed to the officials that an unidentified person gave them the bag containing the substance to be handed over to his aide in Kuala Lumpur. They were trying to smuggle the substance through Tiruchy airport for the first time, but they had travelled abroad several times, he said.In 2011, 5.34 kg ephedrine was seized at Tiruchy airport and three were arrested then, he said.
