BHUBANESWAR: A day after the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) results were out, the private engineering colleges’ association on Thursday expressed apprehension of large-scale vacancies in the institutes in view of the low number of candidates in the merit list.“We had anticipated that this year, the number of qualified candidates would reach one lakh, but the number is much below our anticipation,” the Orissa Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) said.On Wednesday when the results were announced, at least 63,634 qualified JEE in Engineering branch, while 3,535 were in the merit list for MCA and 16,859 in Pharmacy. The association said the number was disappointing. Last year, 53,936 candidates had qualified in the Engineering category and compared to that this year’s increase is negligible. “From the results declared, we presume that this year also, large number of seats will fall vacant,” honorary secretary of OPECA Binod Dash said. The association urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who holds the Technical Education portfolio, to issue clear-cut guidelines about filling up of the vacant seats, including the ones for NRI candidates. Before the e-counselling starts, clear instructions must be issued and the Government should amend the Orissa Professional Educational Institution Act, 2007, by an ordinance, it added.
