New Delhi: Just days after a court in Pune sentenced a teacher to jail or hitting a student on the head in 11 years, a Delhi court on Monday delivered a similar verdict.
Terming corporal punishment as "moral turpitude", the court sentenced a government school teacher to one year rigorous imprisonment for having paraded a student naked 10 years ago.
The student – who was paraded in the nude for close to three hours - was meted out the treatment by the accused P C Gupta for taking a dip in the school tank.
Condemning the act in strongest of words, Metropolitan Magistrate Devendra Kumar was quoted as saying by agencies: "In such a civilised society, no one can imagine that students are being treated in such a manner by a well-educated teacher. They are being punished for small things.”
Quashing the mercy plea of the 65-year-old teacher, the court said the accused deserved “no leniency” as it was an exceptional case with the victim suffering incomparable mental agony.
Gupta, who pleaded on the ground of his clear antecedents, got no mercy from the court.The bench noted that Gupta had not only committed the offence but also committed "contempt of the High Court". "No doubt, the offences committed are not as such big on account of punishment prescribed by the law, but the offences are big on account of humanity,” the court observed
Gupta has also been ordered pay up a fine of Rs 5,000 that will be given to the victim as compensation.
