Sometimes I used to be amazed at the way politicians used to deny evident facts and negate their own beliefs. But after I heard former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah say "You want to hang him, go ahead hang him but the consequences of hanging you must remember... Judges will need to be protected like anything; some crook will come and will murder them". I don't think I'll be ever surprised by what any politician ever says!
If this be the state of affairs in my country then every man who stands by honesty should need protection.
But what I fail to understand is exactly whose interests is Mr. Abdullah advocating so passionately? Is it the people of Kashmir whose lives have been reduced to encounters and terror by the likes of Afzal! Or is he concerned about the rest of India, which is desperately trying to book the culprits of the 93 Mumbai Blasts... the Delhi blasts... the Mumbai train serial blasts... and the list unfortunately goes on.
Or is Mr. Abdullah forwarding the best interests of the politicians who along with the whole nation would have been held hostage if the sinister plans of Afzal and his men had succeeded.
When I put aside all unnecessary arguments to justify Mr. Abdullah's statements, his position looks simple. This man is out of power; the people voted him out. But now this is his golden chance to reap benefits from the Afzal fiasco. I call it a fiasco because according to the Supreme Court verdict there should have been no two thoughts about executing Mohd Afzal in the first place.
This looks like the Farooq Abdullah's best chance to gain sympathy and support of those who for some reason feel Afzal should be granted clemency. I seriously doubt Mr. Abdullah's earnest interest in Afzal's life and death. But he has certainly ensured his own safety and security by making such anti-establishment hawkish statements on national television.
13th December 2001 could have been the darkest day in the history of any democracy. I purposefully did not write the 'Indian democracy' because I'm not sure whether we would have been a democracy or not, had the parliament been hijacked that day.
Afzal's plan was not just a threat to the parliamentarians. But those few minutes before the five militants were gunned down; each and every citizen of India was uncertain about his future and the future of the country. Afzal in his one game plan jeopardized the 57 years of our freedom, sovereignty and secularity.
If Afzal guru is granted clemency, then along with the Indian judiciary, the pride, honor and security of India will be hanged to death... FOREVER!

As I write this article, I don't know if Mohd Afzal Guru will be hanged or not on 20th October. But at this moment, I certainly hang my head in shame...
