TN goes Karnataka's way, bans cell phones in schools
The TN government feels that students are getting distracted by cell phones.

Chennai: If you are a compulsive cell phone user, and a school student in Tamil Nadu, you can no longer sneak your hand in your bag and send that occasional text message in class anymore. Nor can you sneak out of class and play games on your phone every once in a while.

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the use of cell phones in all schools in the state.

It feels many students are getting distracted by cell phones, and are not concentrating on their studies. The ban on cell phones has been welcomed by the school authorities.

Says Dean, Padmaseshadri School, Y G Parthasarathy, "We are very happy with the move because these children do not need phones in school. If there is any emergency, they can always use the school facilities."

While some parents feel cell phones help them track their children after school, most say they are not essential.

Says a parent, Varsha Dileep, "I don't think that it is a necessity. When we were children, we never had phones and we came home safe."

However, students like Shraddha believe the government could have been slightly more flexible.

"I think they could have just included many restrictions instead of completely banning them," says she.

The government, however, has not said what penalties await those who violate the ban. But some schools have said they will seize cell phones if used during school hours.

What's your reaction?
