CHENNAI: The draft report of a study by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has revealed that that a total of 111.86 million tonnes of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission was recorded in Tamil Nadu in the year 2009-10 with per capita emissions amounting to 1.59 tonne. The study titled “Carbon Footprint Study” was a first of its kind in the State where the total emissions as well as the per capita share per person had been calculated with the help of data from 15 State departments. The emission inventorisation for Tamil Nadu had been aligned with the Indian Greenhouse Emissions Report of 2007 to help consistency in future policy initiatives. A break up of the figures put the highest burden on the energy sector in the State which accounted to over 75 per cent of the emissions. This data was on expected lines as the State depends on thermal energy. The transport and industrial sectors occupied the second and third spots with 20,113,210 metric tonnes and 18,125,505 MT respectively. He said that while the report puts the per capita carbon footprint at 1.59 tonnes, a single tree would help sequester just about 30 kg of carbon per year, highlighting the importance of afforestation. In this regard, the State government has embarked on a project to lay plastic roads that would help reuse the non-degradable material.Ramesh Kymal, chairman, Renewable Energy Council of the CII, told Express that the final report of the study would be prepared after consultations with all the departments that helped in producing the draft. With the report showing energy sector as the highest emitter, it was imperative that the State embarked on a plan to increase dependence on renewable energy, he said.
