KOCHI: After a short interval, the toll collection at the National Highway 47 on Aroor - Kumbalam bridge will resume from Friday. The decision was taken by the state Cabinet in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. The state government also decided to pay the toll for people hailing from Kumbalam, after the Central Government turned down their demand to be excluded from the toll. The Centre had made it clear that they cannot allow people from one region to be excluded from toll collection. It was in this backdrop that a decision was taken that the state government will pay the toll for the natives of Kumbalam. The decision has come as a much-awaited relief for the people of Kumbalam. The state government has decided to take measures to exclude people from the Kumbalam grama panchayat from the toll collection by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on the Vyttila-Cherthala bypass, said Excise Minister K Babu. According to the renewed rates of the NHAI, a decision had been taken to collect Rs 150 per vehicle from those staying within 10 km radius of the toll booth. The natives of Kumbalam had come up with protests against this decision. The minister said a decision has also been taken to restart toll collection. The amount collected as toll will be given to the NHAI, Babu said.
