Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government said on Tuesday it would float a global tender for colour television sets that will be given free to thousands of poor people as promised in the Assembly election campaign earlier this month.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said the 14-inch (35-cm) TV sets, which he had promised to people living below the poverty, will be distributed from mid-September.
The 83-year-old Dravida Munnettra Kazgham (DMK) patriarch, who wrested power from his opponent All India Anna Dravida Munnettra Kazgham (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalithaa in the elections, also promised rice at Rs 2 per kg for the poor.
Reservation for minorities and free power for weavers were some of the other promises that the DMK made to Tamil Nadu voters in its election manifesto.
The DMK manifesto also promised pregnant women a monthly allowance of Rs 1000 for six months and LPG stoves to poor families.
