Mumbai: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday stressed the need for development of art and culture to boost tourism in Mumbai and also for the benefit of the new generation.
"A museum depicting the history of Marathi theatre, life and times of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is required.
"Gateway of India and even the majestic building housing Mumbai's municipal corporation are legacy of the British. We have to create our own," Uddhav said at the inauguration of the renovated Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Auditorium in
suburban Mumbai here.
"There are several statues of Shivaji Maharajbut. However, does the younger generation know about the history? Does the younger generation know how many plays Master Dinanath acted in and how many songs he sung?" he asked.
He added that a museum dedicated to the art, culture of the state should be set up for the knowledge of the younger generation and also to boost tourism.
Marathi speakers are crazy about theatre and the medium should be preserved by highlighting its history, he said.
Uddhav also said Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had approved his proposal for development of the eastern water front of Mumbai. "People of Mumbai need a place for family outings and the need of the hour is to create more
such spaces," he said.
Uddhav also noted that preserving the art and culture is necessary as it was like an oxygen in the life of the common man.
