THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The standoff between the ruling political combine and the Opposition LDF that was happening on the floor of the Assembly for the past few days, took a turn for the worse, with allegations and innuendos flying thick against a couple of young CPM MLAs over the scuffle with the Watch and Ward staff that included women. With this, the public and political mood may undergo a redefinition. It may also necessitate the need for a live telecast of the entire Assembly proceedings to make legislators perform in a more mature and responsible manner. Friday’s dramatic turn of events, capped with T V Rajesh, state secretary of DYFI, one among the MLA’s targeted by the UDF, breaking down in front of the media, after the inspection of the video clippings at the instance of the Speaker. The offer made by James Mathew, his colleague and the other one targeted in the fiasco, to quit membership challenging the ruling ministers, is definite to put the whole issue on a high-pitch in the coming days. The UDF Govt, that is existing in power on a wafer-thin majority of MLAs in the Assembly, is surely facing the heat, with the Opposition cashing in on every opportunity to put the government in the dock. While the trend was limited in public ever since the Oommen Chandy Govt came to power this May, the LDF strategy to come up with a flurry of issues on the floor of the Assembly seems to be paying off. With both sides maintaining a neck and neck race to score over the other politically, the two camps would definitely cut a sorry figure before the public. Sans a stable majority for the ruling front, the trend will continue and the state in turn will suffer. The Assembly has hardly taken up any serious legislative business so far though it was in session for nearly three weeks.
