Search and rescue operations for five missing mountaineers of the Indian Navy had to be called off at 4 pm on Friday due to bad weather. Officials said another warning for an avalanche had been issued. They, however, added that the search and rescue will resume Saturday morning.
Earlier in the day, rescue teams had been deployed to search for five members of a mountaineering expedition team from the navy, feared trapped in an avalanche on Mt Trishul in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
10 climbers started the final leg of their journey to the summit of Mt Trishul but were caught in an avalanche.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi had received an SOS from the navy, stating that the members of the expedition were trapped in the snow due to the avalanche.
A multi-agency team had been deployed to conduct search and rescue operations for the mission personnel. The 20-member expedition was flagged off at Mumbai on September 3, and 10 climbers had started the final leg of their journey to the summit early on Friday but were caught in the avalanche.
Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal had said five out of the 10 climbers were safe. Search and rescue operations were being conducted in coordination with the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and State Disaster Response Force, said navy officials.
