Kolkata: A Left Front Minister has asked Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to lay a new line from Krishnagar in Nadia district to Jiagunj in Murshidabad district.
Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Anisur Rahaman said, "This line from Krishnagar to Jiagunj via Chapra, Tehatta, Karimpur, Gopalpur, Jalangi and Raninagar will cover two districts and four sub-divisions benefiting millions of people if the Railway Ministry agrees to the proposal and implement it."
Rahaman, who had already written a letter in this regard to the Railway Minister on July 26, 2010, has reminded her once again through another letter on February 21, 2011, ahead of the Railway Budget.
Referring to geographical importance of the 150 km stretch of land where the line was proposed, Rahaman said the entire area has a border with Bangladesh.
"The region is highly fertile for a wide range of crops and the society is agrarian in nature. Life of those depend on agriculture pivots round production of jute, rice, mango, litchi, banana and jackfruit. The railway link will boost business prospect, besides helping commuters," the minister said in the letter.
Rahaman expressed hope that the Railway Minister would consider this proposal sympathetically and take necessary action to materialise it.
