Tulsi, popularly known as Holy Basil, is considered sacred in Hinduism. It is also worshipped as a goddess at many homes. Tulsi cultivation is quite prevalent in India, especially in Tamil Nadu. People from Kudalur village of Thanjavur district rely on the daily income earned from the Tulsi cultivation. Tulsi Cultivation is quite popular in Kudalur village and its surrounding areas of Theni district. The leaves of the plant are widely used as medicine. Apart from the health benefits, the Tulsi leaves are also used in temples for special pujas and daily needs. They are widely used in various cuisines not only for their pleasant aroma but also for their unique taste. With the onset of the Chaitra month, the frequency of the festivals in the temples has also increased. Due to this, the rate of Tulsi leaves has also increased and so are their prices.
Currently, temple festivals are taking place on a large scale as it is the month of Chitra. Tulsi grown in the areas around Kudalur are being harvested and exported for the temple festivals held in various areas. The use of Tulsi in most temples including Varadharaja Perumal Temple is expected to increase further. Farmers said that tulsi, which is currently selling at more than Rs 60 per kg, has been sold at more than Rs 100 per kg during this season. One of the reasons for the excessive use of Tulsi in temples is due to its significance within the Hindu devotees. It is believed to be an incarnation of Vrinda and an earthly manifestation of Lakshmi. It is also considered as the consort of lord Vishnu.
Tulsi helps in protecting the body from toxin-induced damage. It also prevents liver, kidney and brain injuries. It also possesses anti-bacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties which keep our immune system strong.
