Goa Govt totters, Rane says no threat
Goa Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane has rejected any danger to his government after one of his ministers quit.

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane has rejected any danger to his government in the wake of the resignation of Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate even though there have been rumours that some Congress MLAs are also going to resign.

The Chief Minister was scheduled to meet Governor S C Jamir later on Thursday before deciding on the resignation of Atanasio Monserrate. Monserrate has not quit the Congress as yet.

"There are no indications from Atanasio Monserrate that he will leave the Congress party. He has only resigned from the Cabinet. We have not accepted the resignation. The matter would be discussed with the Governor and then a decision would be taken on that. There is no threat to the Government," Sandesh Prabhudesai, editor of Sunapranth, said.

Sources in the party, however, say a few more Congress MLAs may resign soon. This could force Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane to advance the Assembly elections, which are due in May. The Congress right now has the support of 21 MLAs in the 40-member Assembly.

Monserrate resigned from the Rane Cabinet late on Wednesday night, sparking off the current crisis. The resignation comes in the wake of a controversy over the Goa Regional Plan 2011.

CNN-IBN had earlier highlighted how the plan violated environmental laws. The ambitious project involves building luxury resorts and shopping malls. But environmentalists fear that this will affect the state's green cover.
