Karaikal has, for the first time, drawn a blank in terms of yield of paddy from the Kuruvai cultivation as water from Cauvery was released on time and the south west monsoon had failed.
The losses for this season’s Kuruvai, cultivated over 3,500 hectares, was estimated to be around Rs 32 crore, according to R Sathiyaseelan, Director of Agriculture. Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the state level meeting for the welfare and development of people from the Adi Dravida community, he said that the Karaikal region was not covered by borewells except for some areas of Thirunallar and Nedungadu. In the past few years, despite shortage of Cauvery water, crops could be secured in at least 500 to 600 hectares, but this year was really bad, he said.
However, now the farmers were gearing up for the Samba crop that is cultivated over 6,500 hectares of farmland. He said that some water had reached Thirunallar on Friday and there were expectations of getting Cauvery water.
