Kolkata's Durga Puja Pandal Adorned With 'Puchkas' Gives Perfect 'Taste' of Food and Festival
Puchka-themed Durga Puja Pandal in Calcutta grabs attention for perfectly blending the 'taste' of food and festival.

It’s that time of the year once again when the city adorns itself to welcome Maa Durga. A festival deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of Bengal continues to add captivating elements every year, epitomising its grandeur. As the eagerly anticipated Durga Puja festival commences on October 20, Kolkata never ceases to amaze us with its unique pandals. This year, the spotlight is on the Pucka-themed Pandal, which beautifully fuses ‘food’ and ‘festival.’

In a viral video, a vast pandal is transformed into a gastronomic wonderland, featuring an abundance of Puchkas (Gol Gappas) as the main décor element. Dona plates (Dona, also known as traditional Indian ‘leaf crockery,’ are crafted from leaves found in the wild, such as the Maloo Creeper (Bauhinia Vahill). These leaves are carefully plucked, cleansed, and then naturally dried before being skillfully hand-stitched together using twigs from the same plant) and traditional rolling pins are hung around, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Kolkata’s street food culture.

Even the walls are adorned with Puchkas nestled in each Dona plate. However, the showstopper is a grand Puchka, housing the idol of Maa Durga.

Reportedly, this pandal is situated in Tala Park, as a caption on the micro-blogging site ‘X’ exclaimed, “I am amazed at the depth of creativity in India. Here a whole pandal is made of puchkas with artists from Bengal. I wish to work in this area to highlight the rich creativity of India. Tala park. I love my India.”

“How do they even think of doing that?? Kudos to these creators,” praised one user. “Excellence in its prime I must say,” remarked another. “Main thing is not puchka but the saal leave in which puchka is served , all over the pandal u can see dry leaves used for decoration that’s the main part of whole concept,” lauded a third user.

In the realm of Durga Puja attractions, another noteworthy spectacle is the Disneyland-themed pandal. Sreebhumi Club, the same club that constructed the Burj Khalifa-inspired pandal in 2022, is the creative force behind the Disneyland-themed pandal.
