Year Ender 2023: Every year different types of food trends dominate social media. A few years ago “Black Ice Cream” was a big hit, and then it was the era of photogenic food that came with the swirling smoke of dry ice. In recent years, a section of food content showing bizarre food combos, such as making Maggi noodles with soft drinks, also dominated social media.
The year 2023, saw a few subtle yet major food habits that first impacted the culinary world and eventually trickled down to our Instagram and Twitter feeds. Here are five food trends that took social media by storm:
Charcuterie And Snacking Boards

Charcuterie is a French term for the assembly of cured meats such as cooked ham and sausages. However, charcuterie boards have been reinvented as snacking boards or appetizer boards. People prepare a board with a mix of nuts, cut-up fruits, crackers, fries, and chips. These are served with a selection of sauces and dressings like curd, hummus, tzatziki sauce, and even ketchup. Snacking was a big hit this year and so were the snacking boards.

The United Nations General Assembly declared this year, 2023, as the International Year of Millets with the theme “Healthy Millets, Healthy People”. Millets are climate-resistant and nutritionally rich crops that can grow in arid environments with very little water. India is one of the largest producers of millet. This year saw a jump in people gravitating towards millet-based food. Not only are people buying jowar, ragi, and barri flour but many brands have also launched chips and snacks made out of millet.

The year 2023 saw a jump in the popularity of mugs and bottles such as the viral Stanley cups. This was adjacent to the new food trend of infused water. This year people soaked citrus fruits in their drinking water overnight to make it more flavorful or fragrant. Some people also use vitamin-infused power or tablets to get an extra kick of nutrition while staying hydrated.

2023 was a big year for plant-based sustainable diets. What made these diets slightly different from vegan meals such as avocado toast or exotic dragon fruit salad was a significantly lower carbon footprint. Plant-based meals made out of locally harvested legumes, grains, and fruits that were free of preservatives and pesticides were a hit amongst those who were environmentally and health conscious.

As per an analysis by The Hard Copy, as of 2023, India is the 5th largest market for gin globally. Additionally, the Indian gin market is expected to grow annually substantially by 2027. This growth has been prompted by growing craft gin production in India. Gin brands like Greater Than and Hapusa by Nao Spirits, Stranger & Sons by Third Eye Distillery, and Terai India Dry Gin by Globus Spirits have placed India as some of the finest up-and-coming gin makers in the world.
