Chandra Darshan 2024: Devotees Await First Moon Sighting Of The New Year
The auspicious time for moon sighting on January 12 is from 05:43 pm to 06:35 pm.

Chandra Darshan marks the first day of moon sightings after Amavasya, the new moon day, in Hinduism. Devotees observe a day-long fast and break it after witnessing the new moon on this auspicious day. In the Hindu calendar, the new moon day is known as Amavasya, and the sighting of the moon afterwards holds religious significance.

The first moon sighting of the new year is set to occur after Paush Amavasya, on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha in the Pausha month. This event marks the first moonrise of Shukla Paksha and is considered highly auspicious in Hindu traditions. The moon, symbolizing the mind in astrology, is worshipped to enhance happiness, and prosperity, and rectify any lunar-related defects in the horoscope.

Dr Mrityunjay Tiwari, Head of the Astrology Department at Shri Kallaji Vedic University, provided insights into the first moon sighting of the new year, discussing the auspicious time, worship methods, and the significance of the moon.

As per the Vedic calendar, the first lunar sighting of the new year 2024 falls on Friday, January 12. The Paush Shukla Pratipada Tithi extends until 02:23 p.m. on this day. Friday is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, and performing Lakshmi puja after witnessing the moon is believed to enhance wealth.

The auspicious time for Chandra Darshan on January 12 is from 05:43 p.m. to 06:35 p.m. While the moonrise occurred at 8:08 a.m., it will set at 6:40 p.m. Moonrise in the morning on Pratipada will be dim, so it is advisable to observe the moon in the evening.

The first moon darshan of the year coincides with the formation of Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, occurring from 03:18 p.m. to 07:15 a.m. the next day on January 13.

Devotees are encouraged to worship the moon using white sandalwood, white flowers, Akshat, Roli, incense, a lamp, and Batasha. The Moon God is revered with the chanting of the Chandra Mantra, and an Arghya, comprising milk, white flowers, akshat, and white sandalwood, is offered.

Witnessing the moon on Chandra Darshan is believed to have several benefits, including the removal of mental disorders, the stabilization of the mind, and the attainment of happiness and peace in life. Moreover, the worship of the moon is said to eliminate Chandra Dosha by offering Arghya with milk and water.

As devotees partake in the sacred ritual of Chandra Darshan, the celestial event is not only a spiritual observance but also an embodiment of tradition, astrology, and the pursuit of well-being.
