Padmavati Row: Designers Still Recuperating From The Attack, Will Continue to Support Sanjay Leela Bhansali
She adds that more than the monetary loss it’s the sentiment of the creative expression which is hurt.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who’s known for his larger-than-life depictions on celluloid, finds himself on the receiving end again. The sets of ‘Padmavati’ in Kohlapur were vandalised by around 20 unidentified people thereby torching the costumes and accessories kept inside a trunk.

“It’s too shocking for all of us and we’re all just recuperating right now from the fact that this has happened,” says Rimple of designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula.

Bhansali, who often collaborates with Anju Modi, has teamed up with Delhi-based designer duo for the upcoming magnum opus. “When you see a costume drama and especially when Mr. Bhansali is directing it you know how the costumes play such an important role in it,” says Rimple while speaking to News18.com.

Considering that the film is a dramatized account of the 1303 siege of Chittor fort in Rajashtan, the characters’ costumes including those of Padmavati, Rana Rawal Ratan and Allaudin Khilji have been designed with precision keeping in mind the intricacies.

She adds that more than the monetary loss it’s the sentiment of the creative expression which is hurt. “It takes you back, it takes time to recover from anything as shocking. But nonetheless the fighters we all are – my due respect and wishes to Sanjay sir, I’m sure he’ll bounce back.

“I haven’t really asked anyone for a count right now but from what we’re hearing a lot of them have been burnt to ashes. We’ll be told because we probably have to redo the costumes,” she added.

She maintains that all allegations of the historical facts being tweaked are untrue as she has read the script herself. “We’ve done extensive research on it and we know she’s worshipped as the goddess. Once the movie is out - you’ll see how glorifying her character is. It’s true to the history – nothing has been distorted or tweaked.”

“I’ve gone through the script so I can assure there’s nothing like it. No dream sequence like that, she adds.

Bhansali faced a similar issue in January when Rajput Karni Seva allegedly distorted the Padmavati sets and misbehaved with the crew.

Rimple also advocates the need of dialogue when it comes to such political issues. She believes that all disputes, no matter how grave, can be solved in a civil way and maintain that they’ll stand by Bhansali no matter what.

“There’s a lot that Sanjay sir has to offer to a designer. The influx of creativity has been surreal,” she says while stressing on the fact that the decision to work with Bhansali will always be taken in the blink of an eye.

Even after the hassles, Rimple is grateful and calls themselves fortunate to have bagged this period historical saga. “I’ve only good things to say about the film. I can just say god has been kind and we’ve been fortunate to do such period historical saga.”
