Bollywood actor Vijay Varma is helping to redefine beauty standards by openly discussing his experience with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes white patches to appear on the skin. Recently, while promoting his recently released series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Vijay took the opportunity to shed light on how this condition has impacted his life and career. During a candid conversation with The Times of India, Vijay shared, “I didn’t make a big deal out of it (skin condition). It is just a cosmetic thing, and it is not anything that can change the course of your life. We make it a big deal because it is something that is out there, but I have never really made a big deal out of it.”
The actor admitted that his condition did cause concern during his early days in the industry. “It used to worry me when I was an out-of-work actor. I would wonder whether it might become an obstacle. But ever since I started working and achieving success, it hasn’t troubled me,” he added.
Talking further about his ailment, Vijay explained that he only covers his vitiligo when facing the camera. “I have covered it for my movies because it can be distracting, and I don’t want my audience to focus on anything other than what I’m trying to convey. That’s why I choose to hide it.”
However, Vijay Varma revealed that he never hides his skin condition during public appearances. He noted that people today are very intelligent and have an innate sense of responsibility. He continued, “I have never spoken loosely about my skin condition. Maybe if it were a different time, it could have potentially become a topic of discussion.”
Vijay Varma is among the latest celebrities to openly discuss their health conditions. In 2023, South actor Mamta Mohandas also spoke about her experience with vitiligo. The actress shared how she initially struggled with people’s reactions but chose to speak up to raise awareness about the condition. Several Hollywood celebrities including model Winnie Harlow have also addressed vitiligo. She was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disorder at the age of four.
