Despite Breaking Several Box Office Records, Why This Erotic Horror Didn’t Get A Release In Pakistan

There was a time in Bollywood when films from big stars were ruling the box office. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Hrithik Roshan scored big hits in 2014. During this time, director Bhushan Patel introduced Sunny Leone in the film Ragini MMS 2 which caused a stir at the box office.

Ragini MMS 2 is a 2014 Indian erotic horror thriller film directed by Bhushan Patel and co-produced with Jayasinh Gupta and Sunil Maurya Pradhaan under Balaji Motion Pictures and ALT Entertainment. The film is the sequel to the 2011 horror film Ragini MMS. Ragini MMS 2 stars Sunny Leone and Saahil Prem in the lead roles in a continuation of the storyline of the previous film.

Unlike the first film, the film is not shot in found footage format. The film was a major commercial success and became a box office hit and catapulted Sunny into the general consciousness of the Indian public as a mainstream actress.

Ragini MMS 2 had a very strong opening day where the film grossed Rs 8 crore despite competition from the 2014 T20 World Cup, but somehow managed an opening weekend of Rs 24 crore. Despite its strong opening and good reviews as an adult film, the film unfortunately faltered in its second week, grossing barely Rs 6.5 crore. The film continued its rapid rollercoaster ride in its third week, grossing nearly Rs 7 crore, and a total of about Rs 47 crore in the three weeks.

The film was not released in Pakistan because the authorities there felt that it violated Pakistani audience laws as it contained a lot of adult content. The ban affected the film’s revenue, as box office receipts from Pakistan (which can account for up to 8% of a film’s average revenue) were restricted as a result.
