Veteran actor Raj Babbar is a name that needs no introduction, having appeared in numerous successful films throughout his illustrious career. From the very beginning, he has portrayed a wide range of characters and shared the screen with many leading stars. But do you know who Raj Babbar’s favourite actor is?
According to reports, Raj Babbar has often mentioned in interviews that he is an ardent admirer of Dharmendra. The first time he saw him, he was captivated and couldn’t take his eyes off him.
Recently, an old video of Raj Babbar surfaced in which he was seen expressing his admiration for Dharmendra. He recalled an encounter, where he was sitting next to Dharmendra in his car. He explained how mesmerised he was by the actor, saying he couldn’t look away, as if transfixed by his presence.
Raj Babbar received training in method acting at the National School of Drama, which also included experience in street theatre. He began his film career alongside Reena Roy, one of the most celebrated actresses of the time. He gained notoriety for his chilling portrayal of a rapist in BR Chopra’s Insaf Ka Tarazu, where his character assaults Zeenat Aman’s role and her sister, before being killed by the heroine in the end. Raj Babbar soon became a regular in BR Chopra’s films, starring in Nikaah with Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha, and in Aaj Ki Awaaz with Smita Patil.
His on-screen pairing with Anita Raj was particularly popular, and the duo worked together in several films such as Prem Geet, Naukar Biwi Ka and Jeene Nahi Doonga, among others.
Beyond his acting career, Raj Babbar was also involved in politics. He entered the political arena by joining Janata Dal in 1989, led by VP Singh.
In the 2024 Indian general elections, Raj Babbar contested the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat on an Indian National Congress ticket. In a close race, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh won his fourth consecutive victory in the Gurgaon constituency, defeating Raj Babbar by a margin of 75,079 votes.
