The third installment of the much-awaited Avatar series now has an official title. Director James Cameron, along with stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, made this announcement for the title on Friday at the D23 expo. While the director did not share any footage from the upcoming film, he revealed some concept art at the event. The artwork reportedly included images of Neytiri (Saldana) riding a banshee, what seemed to be enormous airships, and an initial glimpse of the Ash People, a fearsome Na’vi clan covered in eerie soot and otherworldly masks, as they dance around a huge fire pit.
“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love,” he added.
As for the official title, the upcoming film will be called Avatar: Fire and Ash.

According to Variety, Fire and Ash was filmed back-to-back with the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water. The previous movie portrayed the ongoing conflict between humanity and the Na’vi after the return of the exploitative Resources Development Administration (RDA) to Pandora. By the conclusion of The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) manage to repel an RDA attack against the aquatic Metkayina clan and their whale-like companions, the Tulkuns. However, the battle comes at a great cost, as their eldest son is killed, and the RDA continues to maintain a strong presence on Pandora.
The story of Fire and Ash will continue shortly after these events, with Jake and Neytiri encountering the Ash People. Cameron also reportedly hinted that this new clan is more inclined towards violence and power compared to others.
In the upcoming film, Oona Chaplin, known for her role in Game of Thrones, plays Varang, the leader of the Ash People. The cast also includes David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh. Returning to their roles are Worthington, Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco and Dileep Rao.
Both The Way of Water and Fire and Ash were co-written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Initially, they were intended to be a single film, but during the writing process, Cameron decided there was too much content and chose to split the story into two parts, reports Variety.
