Garth Brooks alleges that the woman accusing him of rape is trying to extort him, pointing to a “demand letter” he received before she filed her lawsuit, which accuses him of sexual assault and abuse. In the original complaint, filed anonymously on September 13 in Mississippi, Brooks claims the accuser, a makeup artist known as Jane Roe, who worked with him for 15 years, had been dealing with “financial difficulties” after moving from Tennessee to Mississippi in 2020.
Brooks said that out of loyalty and friendship, he complied with her requests for financial assistance, but alleges that her demands later increased, reports People.
When he refused to give Roe more money or meet her “demands for salaried employment and medical benefits,” Brooks’ complaint claims that she responded with “false and outrageous allegations of sexual misconduct” in a “confidential demand letter” sent by her attorneys on July 17. According to the complaint, this letter contained claims of “sexual grooming, creation of a sexually hostile work environment, unwanted sexual touching and sexual assault.”
Brooks also alleged that Roe threatened to publicly file a lawsuit with these “fabricated allegations” unless he agreed to pay her millions of dollars. The letter reportedly referenced other “celebrity sexual misconduct lawsuits” and their large jury awards.
Then, on August 23, Brooks claimed to have received a second letter from Roe, offering to hold off on filing the lawsuit if he paid her a multi-million dollar settlement. She allegedly warned that failing to meet her demands could cost him “many millions of dollars ‘based on his net worth.'”
Brooks reportedly asserted that Roe was aware of how damaging a public lawsuit would be to his “well-earned reputation” and his career.
According to People, Brooks is seeking a legal declaration that Roe’s accusations of sexual misconduct are false, as well as compensatory damages, punitive damages, and both preliminary and permanent injunctive relief.
On October 3, Roe officially filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles, as obtained by People, accusing Brooks of sexual assault and rape. Roe’s complaint claims that the alleged inappropriate conduct began in 2019 when she was at Brooks’ home for a styling appointment. She alleged that Brooks emerged from the shower naked and demanded sexual favours.
Throughout her time working for Brooks, Roe alleged that he would expose himself, discuss sexual topics openly, share his sexual fantasies and receive explicit text messages, according to the complaint. Roe is now seeking monetary compensation, as well as compensatory and punitive damages.
On Thursday night, Brooks denied all the accusations, stating, “I am not the person she claims me to be.” In a statement to People, the country singer said, “For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars. It has been like having a loaded gun waved in my face.”
