Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony Award for his role in the musical Merrily We Roll Along. He secured a prestigious win in the “Featured Actor in a Musical” category for portraying Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along. The Harry Potter star got emotional as he stepped on to receive the award. He began the acceptance speech with, “I’m gonna just talk fast and try not to cry. This has been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s been unbelievable.” He thanked his co-stars Lindsay Mendez, and Jonathan Groff and said, “It is an honour to be on stage with you all every single night.”

After thanking the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing and the Merrily We Roll Along director Maria Friedman, he took a moment to acknowledge his parents who were part of the crowd. The actor addressed his father and said, “Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Thank you for playing Sondheim in the car and just loving me.” Merrily We Roll Along is a 1981 American musical based on the 1934 play of the same name. Its music and lyrics are written by Stephen Sondheim. It tells the story of three friends and how their friendship changes over the course of 20 years.

In a backstage interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Radcliffe reflected on his career and revealed that he was unclear about his acting journey after the Harry Potter franchise concluded with an eight-movie run. He recalled, “When I finished Potter, I had no idea what my career was going to be. I’d already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn’t know what the future held at all.”

Daniel Radcliffe made his Broadway debut in 2008 with Equus. In Equus, which is based on a 1973 play by Peter Shaffer, the 34-year-old actor had to perform nude. He has since performed in a number of Broadway hits such as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Lifespan of a Fact. Last year he got his first Emmy Award nomination for portrayal of Weird Al Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

The 77th Tony Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, June 16, at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City. Actor Ariana DeBose hosted the award ceremony for the third consecutive year. The night’s big winner was Stereophonic, which won the most awards, including Best Play. The Outsiders won the award for Best Musical.
