Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films often stir debate due to their controversial subjects, yet they have a dedicated following among cinema enthusiasts who appreciate his work. Among his most discussed films is Kabir Singh, which recently marked its 5th anniversary since its release on June 21, 2019. The titular character, portrayed by Shahid Kapoor, remains a prominent figure in Bollywood discussions.
Despite the controversies, Kabir Singh emerged as a hit, setting numerous box-office records. Kiara Advani, who played Preeti Sikka, Kabir’s love interest in the film, commemorated this milestone by sharing a heartfelt tribute on her social media platform. Producer Murad Khetani initially shared the poster of Vanga’s movie on his Instagram story, with the text, “Celebrating five years of Kabir Singh.” Later, Kiara Advani reshared the post and added a simple red heart emoji.
The Bollywood film is a Hindi remake of the Telugu movie Arjun Reddy, where Vijay Deverakonda portrayed the titular character and Shalini Pandey played Preethi Shetty in the original film.
In a recent interview on Neha Dhupia’s talk show, No Filter Neha season 6, Shahid Kapoor spoke about the controversial subject of Kabir Singh. He said, “I’m not here to convince you to like a character. I’m here to be the character. That is what cinema should be. It should be able to create conversation, it should be able to represent society honestly so we actually sit down and talk about it. We live in a society where we have to accept different opinions. So I’m very happy with everybody’s opinions and respectful of everybody’s opinions.”
In the movie, Shahid plays the role of a successful and hard-working surgeon who turns to alcohol after his relationship with his girlfriend, Preethi Sikka, ends turbulently.
Other than Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani, Kabir Singh also featured Adil Hussain, Arjan Bajwa, Suresh Oberoi and Soham Majumdar, among others in supporting roles.
