They may have been close friends once upon a time but filmmaker Karan Johar is clear that he will never be able to rekindle his friendship with Kajol. “That chapter is closed forever," said the filmmaker in one of his most candid interviews ever to Vir Sanghvi.
The filmmaker opened up about his bitter relationship with the actress, whom he once considered his family and blamed her husband, actor Ajay Devgn for ruining their friendship. “He called me and shouted at me and said some really nasty things because he heard at a party that I'd said some things about his wife. I just felt that heresay cannot be the reason for anyone to pick up the phone and say unsavoury things to anyone else. You have to give me the chance to defend myself, “ the filmmaker said and added that he would forgotten that incident as well but later Kajol supporting her husband during the KRK controversy was the final nail in the coffin.
Right before the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ajay Devgn whose film Shivaay was set to release on the same day, accused Karan Johar of bribing Kamaal R Khan to tweet nasty things about Devgn’s film.
“He put out a statement sayingthere should be an investigation and she retweeted it saying 'SHOCKING'. And that was it. I felt she should've not allowed her husband to say such things about me & even if he had, she shouldn't have endorsed and thirdly she should've picked up the phone and called me and said sorry for that entire situation. I'd like to say & I stand by it is that this is not a phase, a feeling that will change. No matter what, she's out of my life."
Karan also spoke honestly at how he was shocked when a journalist had once asked him if he slept with Shah Rukh Khan. “I said if I asked you are you sleeping with your brother, he said 'kya baat kar rahe ho'and I said that's exactly what I mean. Shah Rukh is like family to me. The thought is appalling. You may believe in rumours- if two men are close and one of them is allegedly a homosexual, that means they're having an affair?"
The director added that he was afraid to go for dinner with any male friend lest anyone thought he was sleeping with that person.
Johar also spoke about his now famous video right before the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, where he was forced to prove his patriotism for the country. “It was like one of those Al Qaeda hostage videos," Sanghvi quipped to which Karan said, “It was. Everyone said it as a joke, and I don’t blame anyone because it really felt like that. It felt like there was an invisible gun on my head."
Johar called the attack on Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the sets of Padmavati ‘appalling’. “You haven’t seen the film, it’s being shot there. What do you know about it and how dare someone come on that set and assault that man? It’s ridiculous. And I saw myself in that frame. I thought it could happen to me tomorrow. I could be making a film and be in this situation and it would be appalling if that happened."
