Some Say I am a Ham and That I Over Act in Serials, Says Sudha Chandran
Actress Sudha Chandran, last seen on TV in Tara From Satara, is currently seen anchoring Crime Alert. She said that she had to take up anchoring to tell the viewers that she is more than just a vamp.

Sudha Chandran has had a long career spanning nearly 35 years. From Kaahin Kissi Roz to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Naagin, the actress has her name in the credits of some of the most successful Indian TV shows of all time. The 55-year-old also appeared in a bunch of films before anchoring Crime Alert.

She said, “It is very disturbing emotionally to describe these stories. You have a parameter of crime but when you start anchoring these stories, you realise that crime has no parameter. It has gone way beyond our imagination. It is not like crime is committed by uneducated, we have got very educated people into doing these crimes. It is an eye opener. When you actually see a crime scenario that is when you understand the impact of a crime. You cannot even imagine that a human being can go down to this level. Our platform is not just for entertainment but also to give out social message and awareness.”

She added, “In a daily soap, you are playing character. That is why I took up anchoring because it was very important for me to tell people that there is an image which is stronger than the negative image that I carry because of my serials. When I am anchoring as an individual, as Sudha Chadran who has overcome a lot of difficulties in life and has become a success story. If she is going to talk about authenticity then people should understand and trust the anchor.”

Chandran had also co-produced the crime show’s season one. “Every actor nurtures the idea to become a director then a producer. I always wanted to become a producer but I didn’t have enough money to invest in a daily soap. Crime Alert was happening episodic, so I invested in one episode to see if I am be able to take up the responsibility as a producer. I went and met Mr Bhagvan and I told him if you trust my experience in the industry then I would like to produce one episode. He said ‘definitely Sudhaji’. It was nice of the channel to give new producers a chance to prove. That is how my journey began as a producer.”

The actress, who is popularly known for playing negative roles in TV shows, said, “I never planned to play negative role, it came to me and I experimented and it became successful. I started from goody-two-show and moved to negative. And, anytime it can be vice-versa.”

She also revealed the comments she received for playing such roles. She said that some called her ‘ham’. “Some said I am a ham and that I over act in serials. But then, if it works for the channel and producer then I don’t mind hamming.”

Not script but channel and production house draws Chandran in taking up the project. She said, “Channel and production house draws me to the show. Because the script changes as per the TRP. When I did Kaahin Kissi Roz, Ramola was not a very important character, it was Shaina. But as the episodes progressed people liked Ramola. Where the track turns and moves is later on, with every fortnight.”
