Do you remember the actor who played the role of Indradev in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat? He was often referred to as the Amitabh Bachchan of Punjabi Cinema. He started with facing a lot of hardships which paved the way for him to fulfill his dreams of becoming a hero. Over his career, he has worked in more than 300 films. But before his death, he faced quite some hardships.
Satish Kaul hails from Kashmir and is the son of Mohan Lal, a Kashmiri music composer who was a director at Mumbai Doordarshan. Satish Kaul always dreamed of becoming an actor since his childhood. His burning passion for acting got him into the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where his career began. While he struggled to find his footing in the industry and make his mark initially, it led him to the Punjabi film industry, where he became a prominent face.
Finally, his dream of coming to Bollywood was also fulfilled. His acting chops were first noticed in Ved Rahi’s Prem Parbat in 1973. He then played the lead in a few films like Mere Satraj and Harfan Maula. He also worked with Dev Anand in the film Warrant and Subhash Ghai’s Karma, where he shared the screen with Dilip Kumar.
He has also worked in memorable TV serials including BR Chopra’s Mahabharat and Vikram Betal. He reached great heights in Punjabi cinema, but could not find similar success in Bollywood. As per reports, he began signing up for B-grade films and by the 90s, his career took a nosedive.
Satish Kaul was married and soon after his wife divorced him and left with their son to the USA. He then lived a life of hardship and solitude. His real struggle began when all his savings blew up on his father’s cancer treatment, who later died. He also lost his mother after some time.
Despite facing many challenges, Satish Kaul refused to give up. He established an acting school in Punjab, but reportedly, he faced an injury that kept him in the hospital for a long time. The actor, who has worked in more than 300 films was left struggling for money. He even sought help from various film stars and it was only Jackie Shroff who stepped forward. The last few days of his life were spent at the Swami Vivekanand Old Age Home in Ludhiana, where he took his last breath.
