Katy Perry truly emerged as the star of the night at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, dazzling the audience with her 10-song medley performance along the sidelines of winning the Video Vanguard trophy at the UBS Arena on Wednesday. Her performance featured hits like Dark Horse and E.T., during which she presented a dramatic spectacle for the audience. Following the performance, Perry had another big moment as she was awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from none other than her fiance Orlando Bloom. “You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katherine Hudson. You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light, and her unique sense of humor to every song she writes and music video she creates,” Bloom said as he gave a shoutout to the 143 artists.
In her acceptance speech, the singer extended her gratitude to MTV for supporting artists to extend their “worlds beyond a song.” She also acknowledged the support of the LGBTQ community and added, “My Katy Kats, who stood by me for a lifetime, and the LGBTQ community, who I recognize that I would not be here without.” In the end, she thanked her fiance and her daughter, Daisy Dove.
Katy Perry’s award marks her first time back on the VMA stage since 2017, when she was both the host and the performer at the star-studded evening. On the work front, the singer made her return to pop music in July with Woman’s World. She also announced her next album, 143, her first in four years following 2020’s Smile. It is set for release on September 20.
