When 12 Different Actors Rejected AR Murugadoss' Ghajini Before Suriya Was Finalised
Tamil film Ghajini was backed by Salem Chandrasekharan and starred Suriya along with Asin and Pradeep Rawat as the antagonist.

In 2005, AR Murugadoss’s Ghajini, headlined by Suriya, was released, creating a huge storm at the box office. A couple of years later, it was remade into Hindi with Aamir Khan in the lead with the same name and it was the first Bollywood film to ever enter the Rs 100 crore club.

But did you know that 12 actors rejected Ghajini? Later, it was offered to Suriya.

Tamil film Ghajini was backed by Salem Chandrasekharan and starred Suriya along with Asin and Pradeep Rawat as the antagonist. Nayanthara and Riyaz Khan featured in supporting roles. Interestingly, before Suriya signed the film, 12 other actors were offered and they rejected it. As per reports, the director had first approached actors like Ajith Kumar, R Madhavan and Mahesh Babu, but they all turned down the role because they did not like the script.

In a live session with actor Suriya, R Madhavan opened up about why he rejected the film. He claimed that he did not like the second half of the film. He said, “I told AR Murugadoss sir that I didn’t like the second half of the film.” He expressed his happiness to see Suriya in the film and shared, “Ghajini went to many heroes and finally came to you. I was very happy. I had seen you in Kaakha Kaakha and felt that Ghajini had finally gone to the right person.”

Suriya was the 13th actor the director approached and finally, he was signed up for the role. Following its huge success, in 2008, the director remade the film in Hindi, where Asin and Pradeep Rawat reprised their roles, while Aamir Khan was roped in as the lead actor and Jiah Khan in the supporting role. Interestingly, the director’s first choice was not the PK star. He first approached Salman Khan, who turned him down as the script did not interest him. Eventually, Aamir Khan signed the film.

The Tamil version of Ghajini was made on a budget of Rs 7 crore and minted Rs 50 crore at the box office. Meanwhile, the Hindi one was made on a budget of Rs 65 crore. It is estimated that the film minted around Rs 232 crore worldwide.
