Ranbir Kapoor became the talk of the town after Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor said some controversial things about the actor on Karan Johar’s popular chat show, Koffee With Karan, in 2010. Interestingly, Deepika and Ranbir’s relationship had just ended when she appeared on KWK with Sonam and the two actresses took several digs at the ‘Animal’ star.
During a segment of the show, Karan had asked Deepika what she would like to gift Ranbir, she replied, “a box of condoms”. She also jested that Ranbir should endorse a condom brand. Sonam also said that Ranbir wouldn’t make a good boyfriend.
During an interview on TBIP’s Tete-a-Tete in September 2012, Ranbir Kapoor had spoken at length about the episode and how he handled the negativity that came his way after the episode was aired.
“There was a lot of negativity surrounding it. I remember when I watched the show. I saw it a day before it aired and the only thing that I said was, ‘b*tch’, and I put it off and I forgot about it because I was there on the day that they were shooting the episode. I don’t know in what context they said it. We are all friends. We have worked together. I have had history with Deepika but there were certain things which I personally feel she shouldn’t have said, but it’s fine,” Ranbir had said in the interview.
Ranbir had also revealed that while he was okay with the entire hullabaloo around the episode, his parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, took an offence.
“My parents took it badly. I wasn’t in Mumbai at that time. My dad spoke with press. So, it just got a little ugly. I was linked with everyone I was working with at that time. It got a bit too much because I felt it took away the spotlight from my work,” Ranbir had recalled.
Sonam and Deepika’s joint appearance had created quite a stir, both in the industry and among fans. The episode is still remembered as one of the most candid ones. However, all the actors are good friends today, including Ranbir and Deepika.
