Singer Usha Uthup is a rare talent in the Indian music industry who has continuously evolved with changing times. The veteran singer, one of the singers who introduced pop and jazz songs popular in the 90s, turned 76 on Tuesday. Usha Uthup showed her keen interest in singing at an early age, she started her music career in Chennai in 1969 when she used to perform at events and clubs. The singer started with a few gigs that she got with the help of her aunt and later signed a contract with a hotel and got her first monthly salary of just Rs 750.
Usha was the highest-paid singer in the clubs in those years. She made her debut in Bollywood with Dev Anand’s hare Rama Hare Krishna. In an old interview with The Times Of India, the singer shared that Dev Anand once came to Delhi to listen to her songs at a nightclub. She called it a very special association with him. “I was excited after meeting him because, after the show got over, he asked me whether I would work on his project Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” Usha shared.
From singing at the night clubs to giving her voice to over 1,000 songs in 17 Indian languages and across continents, Usha Uthup became the first pop icon.
She has given most exceptional songs including Darling from 7 Khoon Maaf, Ori Ori Baba from Balidan, Koi Yahan Nache from Disco Dancer, Hari Om Hari from Pyaara Dushman and One Two Cha Cha Cha from Shalimar are among the most.
According to Business Insider, Usha Uthup’s net worth currently is $5 Million (Rs 37.50 crore).
In September, Usha Uthup received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Tamil Nadu IT Minister Dr Palanivel Thiagarajan, Renuka David and Colonel David Devasahayam at the annual Radiant Wellness Conclave, an event about holistic wellness in Chennai.
