The ‘Dhangar’ community of Maharashtra will on Tuesday hold silent protests at the collectors’ offices in all districts of Maharashtra as a “reminder" to CM Eknath Shinde-led state government about their reservation. The state had sought 50 days to resolve this issue, which got over last week. Member of Legislative Council (MLC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from the community Gopichand Padalkar has warned the state of intense protests, as the government doesn’t seem serious about Dhangar reservation.
On the one hand, the state is facing the heat over Maratha reservation, while on the other, the Other Backward Class (OBC) community is unhappy about the government’s plan to include Maratha community leaders, instead of only those from Marathwada, in the Kunbi category. Meanwhile, Dhangars are seeking reservation, with a BJP leader protesting against his own government in the state.
In a video message to the Dhangar community, Padalkar has requested community members from all districts to hold peaceful protests at their collector’s or tehsil office and submit a memorandum for reservation.
“We will submit our demand of immediate implementation of reservation for the Dhangar community. We will protest in a democratic way," said Padalkar, asking the community to gather in large numbers.
Padalkar feels the government has not taken any concrete steps to ensure reservation for the ‘Dhangar’ community. The protests are to highlight the gravity of the issue and remind the state of its assurance, he says.
Padalkar will participate in the silent protest in Mumbai and will also hand over the letter of memorandum to Mumbai collector in the presence of Dhangar community members.
