It took Angelo Mathews more than the regulated time that led Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan to appeal for his dismissal and he was given out - 'timed-out'

Angelo Mathews registered his name in unwanted record books with a bizarre dismissal in the ODI World Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on Monday. Matthews was given out ‘timed-out’ after he failed to take guard in time when he came out to bat.

It was the 25th over of the match when Matthews replaced Sadeera Samarawickrama in the middle. However, the former Sri Lanka captain had his helmet strap broken and asked for a replacement before taking the guard.

It took him more than the regulated time that led Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan to appeal for his dismissal.

Eventually, Matthews was given the marching orders.

According to playing conditions for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, a batter has to be ready to face the ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement of a previous player.

“40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,” it is stated in ICC playing conditions.

“40.1.2 In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For the purposes of that Law the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 2 minutes referred to above,” it added.

Meanwhile, according to the rule, the bowler doesn’t get the credit for the wicket.

It was the first time in the history of international cricket that a batter has been dismissed in such a way.

Mathews was livid with the decision and left the ground in disappointment as he also threw his helmet after crossing the boundary line.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Sri Lanka were half down for just 135 in 24.2 overs.
